Homeopathy is an alternative form of health care developed in Germany in the late 1700s. It involves giving extremely small doses of substances that produce the symptoms of illness in healthy people when given in larger doses. This is referred to as “like cures like.” The goal of this is to stimulate the body’s natural defense system to treat or prevent an illness.
Homeopathy often involves using natural substances that come from plants, minerals or animals. A remedy is prepared by diluting the substance in a series of steps. Homeopathic practitioners (Homeopaths) believe that this process can maintain a substance's healing properties regardless of how many times it has been diluted.
A fundamental concept of homeopathic medicine is the belief that a patient’s treatment should be selected based upon a total picture of an individual and his symptoms, not solely upon the symptoms of a disease. Homeopaths evaluate not only a person's physical symptoms but emotions, mental states, lifestyle, nutrition, and other aspects. In homeopathy, different people with the same symptoms may receive different homeopathic remedies. Many believe that homeopathy is a safe, natural method to treating health concerns and illnesses.
