See Clearly with Lutein

Lutein may reduce the risk of macular degeneration, say researchers. That’s a nice benefit for those of us getting on in years. Lutein is a member of the carotenoid family of nutrients and may indeed promote good eyesight – not just in the old, though, but in younger persons as well. Responsible for the color of vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and other fruits and vegetables, lutein comprises the concentration of pigment in the center of the eye’s retina, where vision sensitivity is greatest.

But the benefits of lutein and lutein supplements may go beyond the minds eye. Adequate amounts of lutein in diet may also reduce the risk of colon problems and heart malfunction. As is the case with so many of life’s naturally-occurring nutrients, lutein acts as an antioxidant in the body, fighting the free radicals that cause oxidative stress in cells. Does a lutein supplement a day keep the doctor away? Well, considering all that lutein may do to protect vital organs, visits to your family doctor and / or your ophthalmologist may be farer and fewer between.

Lewis Labs Brewers Yeast Actually Tastes Good!

Despite the health benefits of brewers yeast, I fail to come to grips with its bitter aftertaste. In fact, until Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast came along, I would have never considered taking the nasty supplement on a daily basis. How Lewis Labs eliminates the bad taste of brewer's yeast is, of course, a proprietary secret, so let's get right to the benefits of taking a brewer's yeast supplement every day.

Brewer's yeast, the yeast used to make beer, is said to aid healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to more efficiently metabolize fats and carbohydrates in the body. Does this mean drinking more beer will yield similar results?

Not really. When isolated in supplement form, as is the case with Lewis Labs Brewers Yeast, minerals such as selenium, chromium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, copper, manganese, iron and zinc work together to better moderate metabolism through affecting blood glucose and insulin levels in a positive way, something that a "Bud" could never hope to accomplish.

Keep the Body Iron Strong

Of all the things your body can do without - iron isn't one of them. Iron is essential to every body function and an iron deficiency can result in organ damage, poor clotting and cell death.

How do you know if you're getting enough iron? The best way to find out is with a simple blood test conducted by your doctor or local clinic. If your iron count is low, chances are you'll be advised to either increase iron-rich foods in your diet or start a regimen of iron supplements - or both. If your iron count is high or just right, you can expect your doctor to advise you accordingly too.

As we get older, it's important to maintain balanced iron levels, as too much iron may interfere with proper heart function and too little iron, a condition known as iron deficiency anemia, when left untreated can result in shortness of breath, pale skin, poor cognitive function, dizziness, a weakened immune system, fatigue and loss of energy. Because symptoms of iron deficiency are common to other disorders as well, a blood test is really the only accurate way to effectively determine iron deficiency.

Healthy Prostate and Ovary Leads to Reproductive Vigor

Infertility and reproductive dysfunction has become more common among Americans who resort to poor diet, little exercise and improper hydration and nutrition. As a result, the use of fertility drugs has become ordinary and is often a misguided substitute for the proper nutrition needed to put your system back on track. After all, as a fertilizer, seminal fluid needs to be packed with vital nutrients and the ovaries healthy and receptive to conception.

But some doctors are poorly trained in areas of nutrition and frequently fall short of adequately advising patients on the reproductive benefits of good nutrition, other than just telling you to "eat right" or deliver a brief lecture to you on the food pyramid.  Subsequently, a simple nutritional solution to reproductive potency may be supplanted with a harsh, synthetically-based fertility treatment.

It isn't difficult to achieve a healthy prostate and ovaries with good diet, a moderate amount of exercise and a dietary supplement specifically formulated for reproductive health. Start there, and if all else fails, at least you can say you gave good nutrition your best shot.

Green Tea Benefits Long Life

Green tea has more or less been touted at the antioxidant of the century. Why? Because a compound found in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, is a powerful antioxidant said to fight the free radicals that promote tumor growth and debilitating illness. EGCG is the focus of many studies centered on heart and brain health, its effects on cognitive function and the role EGCG plays in weight loss and weight management.

Does green tea promote weight loss? Is it the caffeine? To a certain extent yes, but there's more to it. The Journal of Obesity reports that bioflavonoid catechins in green tea may enhance metabolism and burn calories by increasing the lifespan of norepinephrine in the brain, a neurotransmitter that helps govern blood pressure and heart rate. Green tea is also said to promote thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories.

And what about all this rhetoric that Asian people live longer because they drink green tea? Well, a 2006 study published in the Journal of American Medicine found drinking five or more cups of green tea daily may reduce your risk of various heart problems and failure. Pass the green tea this way please.

Goiter Symptoms and Iodine

Goiter results from an enlarged thyroid gland and is often due to a lack of iodine in the diet.  The thyroid needs iodine to produce thyroid hormones and if only insufficient iodine is available, the thyroid gland enlarges to produce the amount needed.

Thanks to iodized salt and iodize-rich soil and seafood, incidents of goiter have become less common among Americans. But goiter, too, results from more serious underactive (hypothyroidism) and overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroid conditions and may lead to Hashimoto's and Graves' diseases respectively.

Goiter is more than just a case a swollen glands and MayoClinic.com suggests seeing a doctor whenever you experience widespread swelling of the front of your neck and above and between your collarbones. A healthy thyroid is vital to good metabolism and early detection of a problem may make all the difference.

Gluten-Free Not Just for Celiacs

In the past, a gluten-free diet was said one only to be for Celiac sufferers, people prone to genetic gluten intolerance. Gluten is the sticky stuff in dough and comprises the protein components of wheat, rye, barley and triticale (a grain hybrid). It's difficult for the body to digest and to follow a gluten-free diet is no piece of cake, as so many processed foods from hot dogs to soda contain gluten.

Research indicates that adhering to a gluten free diet may even benefit those who don't suffer from CD (Celiac Disease). Products containing gluten are typically high in complex carbohydrates and cutting back on these foods may result in weight loss.

Nutritionists warn to be cognizant of your nutritional needs while going gluten free. Notwithstanding gluten's high calorie count, it happens to be very nutritious, which is why is appears in so many products. Unfortunately, gluten is often replaced with substitutes that are low in B vitamins and fiber, components present in a balanced diet. Remember, if a food product contains wheat, or wheat by products of any kind, it isn't gluten free.

Garlic: One of Natures Most Pronounced Antioxidants

For thousands of years, garlic has been used in natural medicine to treat a variety of viral, bacterial and fungal infections, and to minister to wounds, tumors and intestinal parasites. Garlic may speed up metabolism and help burn fat, and in the literature is hailed as a free radical fighting agent, an immune system booster and a heart-healthy food.  Legend has it that garlic was reputed effective in fighting the plague of the Middle Ages.

Looking at the herb from a nutritive perspective, garlic contains healthy amino acids and high levels of the constituent alliin, an amino acid derivative said to be responsible for the herb's health benefits. Garlic contains trace minerals copper, zinc, germanium, selenium, iron and magnesium, vitamins A and C and several beneficial sulfuric compounds known to bind to heavy metals and toxins in the liver and transport them for elimination. The question is, are garlic supplements just as effective?

Most nutritionists agree that when it comes to a balanced diet, few supplements step up to their whole food counterparts. However, garlic is more likely to be tolerated by garlic-sensitive individuals and is more convenient to consume on a daily basis than is raw garlic. Notwithstanding the ongoing controversy as to which form of garlic supplement is most effective, some nutritionists consider odorless garlic supplements to be inferior, as their alliin count may be diminished in the extraction process.

GABA may give you the Ultimate Mind Body

GABA, or gamma amino butyric acid, is a brain chemical linked to well-being. In fact, Yen for Zen researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and McLean Hospital have found that doing yoga may increase GABA levels in the brain by as much as 27 percent. But then there are those of us who don't - and never will - practice yoga. So what do we do to raise GABA levels and what is all this GABA about anyway?

GABA is a nonessential amino and an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It's part of what controls our cravings, desires, moods, ability to endure and just about anything attached to emotion. It's used by the brain to promote calmness and tranquility and has been found extremely useful to those suffering from anxiety, stress and restlessness and who are in search of a natural, non-addictive alternative to prescription drugs.

Although concentrations of GABA occur in whole food sources such as certain fish (mainly mackerel) and wheat bran, there is a general lack of good information regarding GABA levels in specific foods, encouraging most who seek this mood-altering nutrient to rely on dietary supplements. Many have found GABA supplements effective in aiding sleeplessness, tobacco addiction, irritability and attention deficit.

Think you're getting Enough Fiber?

Think again. And you wouldn't happen to know the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber would you? I didn't think so. There are six nutrient groups the body needs to promote good health, one of which is fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and comprises the moister, meaty parts of many fruits, grains, vegetables, oatmeal and dried beans. Insoluble fiber is more difficult to digest and occurs in grain brans, vegetable peels and skins.

Fiber is made mostly of carbohydrates, but isn't high in calories and is rarely broken down by the body for energy. No digestive enzymes are produced in the body to act on fiber, so the majority of it passes through the body undigested, which is why it helps keep us regular.

With American diets under attack by high cholesterol, fats, indigestion and processed foods, many have turned to fiber supplements as a means of boosting fiber intake. Righteously so! Too little fiber in the diet can wreak havoc on blood sugar levels and throw insulin production way off base, setting the stage for one of the most life-threatening disorders of all time. And you know which one I'm talking about.

Etherium Gold for the Alpha in You

Harmonizing the two hemispheres of the brain is what Etherium Gold is all about. In doing so, this monatomic mineral compound is purported to heighten mental acuity, improve learning ability and enhance creativity. It's "yogi-like" in its potential and may actually boost alpha wave production; alpha brain waves are typically associated with a state of relaxation, and even more so with intense meditative states.

Etherium Gold contains Monatrace, a naturally occurring seabed deposit that contains monatomic gold and other mineral elements. The ancient Egyptians and Sumarians used monatomic elements to satisfy their "light body" and encourage spiritual transformation and enlightenment through optimum mental health. In fact, some scientists believe that monatomic gold, hence Etherium Gold, can actually alter time, space and gravity.

I wouldn't expect your world to change too much while taking Etherium Gold. However, I've used it to promote states of relaxation and to take the edge off a busy day. In both cases, Etherium Gold works.

Essential Fatty Acids are the Good Fats!

When most people think of fats - donuts, fried food, potato chips and red meat come to mind. Twenty years ago, few of us would've even thought there was such a thing as good fats, but there are and they're essential to good health.   Essential fatty acids are unsaturated fats typically found in the oils of vegetables, certain nuts and seeds and some fish. They're said to benefit health more so than the saturated fats found in meat and dairy products and may even have a positive impact on cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are what we call them these days. They're not produced by the body, but are essential to the normal growth and function of every muscle, nerve, cell and organ in the body. Fish oil supplements are among the most popular form of essential fatty acid intake and are typically balanced at a ratio of three omega-6 fatty acids to every one omega-3 (3:1). Research has revealed a severe imbalance of omega-6 essential fatty acids among the American population, mostly as a direct result of their overindulging in red meat, cheese and dairy products.

Too many omega-6 fatty acids, which are dependent on omega-3s for good health, can lead to the development of gallstones, tumors and a long list of uncomfortable disorders.

Dynamic Health Goji Scrubs Free Radicals

It's the year of the berry. Acai berries, pomegranate and goji berries have achieved antioxidant fame with acerola berries and camu camu close behind. Is one better than the other for fighting oxidative stress? I say take your pick.

But first, let me say this about Dynamic Health Goji Gold. This powerful and potent antioxidant juice has an ORAC rating of practically 60,000. The ORAC scale is a standardized test used by the US Department of Agriculture to measure the total antioxidant potency of foods and nutritional supplements. ORAC stands for "Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity," and is a measurement expressed as "ORAC units per 100 grams" of a given food or supplement. Goji berries have ten times the ORAC of blueberries and 20 times that of raspberries. Pretty powerful stuff, wouldn't you say?

You'll find that glamour berries like goji and acai cost a few bucks and wonder if they're worth the money. Ask yourself this: "How much is living healthy actually worth?"

Bromelain to Battle Inflammation

If you have ever marinated anything in pineapple juice, or baked a ham or turkey with pineapple slices, you may already be familiar with bromelain. It's the plant enzyme abundant in pineapple juice that breaks down proteins in meat. In supplement form, bromelain may significantly aid digestion and assist the body in absorbing nutrients.

Bromelain also appears well-suited to aid joint pain and swelling and to suppress the build-up of arterial plaque that leads to dangerous clotting. Not too shabby for a tropical fruit. In fact, bromelain may even relieve painful symptoms associated with varicose veins.

Unfortunately, you'd have to consume unhealthy amounts of calorie-rich pineapple to reap the benefits of bromelain through whole food, which is why bromelain supplements are popular. Aside from a little tummy upset and an occasional allergy or two, you'll find them safe and effective and with few side effects.

Beta-sitosterol Benefits the Whole Body

Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterol (plant alcohol) said to balance cholesterol. It's found in just about every vegetable imaginable and readily available in supplement form. If you sort through enough beta-sitosterol literature, you'll find the plant compound is indeed good for you and probably the reason why Mom insisted we eat our vegetables. Unfortunately, as adults, too few of us eat too few vegetables and should probably supplement with beta-sitosterol, something Mom would've never thought of in a million years.

Plant sterols are the new dietary craze in supplements and have been found to benefit the prostate, heart, liver, kidneys, GI tract, brain and more - as do vegetables. Consider a diet rich in fibrous, leafy plants accompanied by a daily beta-sitosterol supplement. Your cholesterol may drop just thinking about it.

Acai Extract: Rainforest Phenom

Acai has one of the highest ORAC ratings of all the dark berries and is full of antioxidant anthocyanins that work to preserve healthy cell tissue and propel longevity. Acai extract contains high levels of omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, good fats that target low cholesterol and healthy insulin resistance.

This benevolent Brazilian berry has allegedly been a center of nutrition among various tribes in the South American rainforest for centuries, as all healthy fruit is to indigenous peoples around the world. Whether or not acai extract is truly an antioxidant phenomenon has yet to be seen; scientists have only recently begun to closely examine the berry's impact on human health over time.

Acai is high in vitamins B1, B2, B3, C and E and minerals such as iron, calcium, copper, zinc, potassium, phosphorous and magnesium, so there's little arguing the health benefits of acai extract. Is it worth the money? Only as much as you value your health I suppose.

Look and Feel Younger with CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 may be the most exploited nutrient of the decade and probably the least understood. Because CoQ10 occurs naturally in the body and declines with age, it's touted industry-wide as an anti-aging supplement common to skin creams and cosmetics and watched closely for its potential in improving cardiovascular health.

Literature suggests that we're all better off using CoQ10 products than not, especially in dietary supplement form, as many connections have been made between the increasing absence of CoQ10 in the body and signs of aging such as scaly, wrinkled skin, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, periodontal problems, a bad heart and waning eyesight. Clinical studies indicate that, at the end of the day, CoQ10 may indeed play a role in good health.

No daily requirement for CoQ10 has been established and the extent to which supplementation is needed may vary significantly among individuals. To date, most nutritionists suggest between 100 and 200 mg a day. Few side effects of CoQ10 have been reported, encouraging the consumption of CoQ10 supplements for sustained energy and vitality and the application of CoQ10 skin creams to restore skin's elasticity and to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Fish Oil May Be Good for Your Heart

A teaspoon a day keeps the doctor away - or at least we think so. The omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) found in cod liver oil are said to strengthen the heart and immune system and even improve cognitive function. Because cod is a deep, coldwater fish, the fish oil extracted from its liver may contain higher levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids and fewer contaminants than farm raised tuna, salmon mackerel or herring.

Despite cod liver oil's health benefits, it's advisable to exercise caution when using cod liver oil regularly, as it contains high levels of vitamin A and D, which are toxic in excess. If you're taking a multivitamin and / or vitamin A and / or D supplements concurrent with a cod liver oil regimen, you may want to ensure that you're not getting too much of either, as diminished health may result. The National Institutes of Health and The Office of Dietary Supplements websites contain invaluable information about the recommended daily value of nutrients, deficiencies, toxicity and more.

Coconut Oil Benefits: Fact or Fiction?

"Is coconut oil really good for me?" is a popular question these days. "Or, is it just better than other oils for cooking and frying?" - Yes and no on all counts. Coconut oil is a vegetable oil, of which all types contain plenty of down right, no good fat. However, when compared to seed oils and animal-derived fats, coconut oil stands out as one that may wreak less havoc on cholesterol.

You see, unlike the long-chain triglycerides found in other cooking oils, coconut oil contains caprylic and lauric fatty acids, neither of which raise serum cholesterol levels nor promote plaque buildup on artery walls. And, because coconut oil's medium-chain-triglycerides are processed directly into the liver, they're immediately converted to energy, fueling metabolism and aiding weight management.

Warning! Keep your coconut oil habit to once or twice a week and in moderation, as nutritionists say too much coconut oil will put you in the same blubbery rut as the others.

Children's Probiotics: Nature's Way Primadophilus for Kids

Probiotics are good for kids too, say experts at Harvard Medical School's Division of Nutrition. Findings presented at the Probiotics and Intestinal Health in Children symposium suggests that, when introduced to the diet, probiotic supplements may reduce incidents of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Antibiotics tend to disrupt the balance of normal microflora in the gut, which can lead to diarrhea, dehydration and discomfort.

But the benefits of Nature's Way Primadophilus may be more widespread than antibiotic-related symptoms. Recent studies conducted on daycare children indicate the potential for a lower incidence of fever, flu and the common cold, highly contagious viruses kids love to bring home to their families.

Is this good news for parents? I would imagine so. Few studies, however, address the long-term impact of probiotics on children and whether or not a child's immune system and GI function may grow dependent on them. To date, probiotic supplements have been recommended as an aid to various intestinal disorders, but not solely as a means of preventive maintenance to digestive health.

Amino Acids Keep you Healthy

Your body is full of acid - amino acids that is. Amino acids are nitrogen-containing compounds that occur naturally in the body and are essential to good health. In fact, eight of the 20 commonly known amino acids are needed to maintain a healthy metabolism, promote tissue repair and growth, protect nerves and synthesize the protein needed to build lean muscle. But if they're produced naturally in the body, "why should I consider an amino acid dietary supplement?"

The answer is simple. You're body doesn't produce the essential eight. You must obtain these through diet. And unless your diet is balanced to contain adequate amounts of dairy, red meat, fish and poultry, nuts, grains, beans, peas and soy - you're not getting them.

Now any nutritionist will tell you that whole food nutrition is superior to dietary supplements. But then reality sets in. You're either always on the run at the office or at home - and don't have time to consider a balanced diet, or you're engaged in lots of physical exercise, training or otherwise, and need higher levels of amino acids than those with less active lifestyles. There are many excellent amino acids supplements on market that will suit your needs. Read some labels, talk to a nutritionist and do some Internet research, because, unless you're getting your share of amino acids through diet, you may be in for some trouble down the road.

Feel Good with 5-HTP

osIf you've been feeling down lately, have problems with cravings, general pain or get sick often, you may want to put a little 5-HTP in your diet. When taken in supplement form, 5-HTP may elevate mood, strengthen the immune system and boost endorphin counts, too low levels of which are associated with fatigue, pain, headaches and morning stiffness.

In the liver and brain, the nutrient 5-HTP is converted to serotonin, an important monoamine neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite and sensory perception. Maintaining adequate levels of serotonin are crucial to your ability to relax and stay calm and even experience more frequent bouts of euphoria. In contrast, to little serotonin may lead to anxiety, irritability, sleeplessness and other common behavioral problems.

Although 5-HTP is currently being investigated for its potential as an antioxidant in slowing signs of aging and shielding the body from illness, most clinical research, to date, has been focused on the nutrient's ability to affect mood and cravings.  Studies show 5-HTP's effectiveness in curbing appetite and the uncontrollable desire for carbohydrates, opening the door for the nutrient's role in weight management. 5-HTP is considered relatively safe in the short term and may be the answer to solving many common problems through enhanced nutrition.

Kyolic: The Best Way to Enjoy Garlic's Health Benefits

Garlic provides cardiovascular support and helps stimulate your body's defenses. But did you know that not all garlic supplements are created equal? Basically, you have four choices:  heat distilled garlic oil in softgels, heat dehydrated garlic seasoning powder in capsules or tablets, garlic oil macerates, or Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract.

Nattokinase: Take this Japanese Cheese to Heart

We get too little exercise. Our lives are filled with stress. And we've removed the healthy fiber from our diets, filling our plates with saturated fat and sugar. Fortunately, an ancient Japanese cheese may hold the secret to sustaining healthy heart function. Nattokinase is an enzyme found in Natto, a popular Japanese cheese made from fermented soybeans. Nattokinase enhances the body's natural ability to fight blood clots and may actually help to dissolve blood clots, promoting healthy blood pressure and heart function.

Nattokinase has an advantage over blood thinners because its effects are long lasting, without the side effects of many pharmaceuticals. NSI Nattokinase uses NSK-SD™, a highly purified form of nattokinase made with a patented process that removes all vitamin K, making it safe for individuals taking blood-thinning medications. As we age, the body's natural defenses for fighting blood clots decreases. But the natural clot-fighting properties in Nattokinase supplements may be the answer to sustained cardiac health.

Add Taurine to Your Weight Loss Regimen

Do you get enough taurine? Taurine is an organic acid that naturally occurs in our bodies. If you've had an energy drink recently, chances are it contained taurine. And taurine is commonly added to bodybuilding supplements like creatine because it may help boost athletic performance, raise exercise capacity and lessen muscle fatigue. If you're a vegan, chances are you're not getting enough taurine in your diet since taurine is mainly consumed through eggs and dairy products. But natural taurine supplements can provide our bodies with this important amino acid that may offer healthy support for a variety of bodily functions, including a healthy cardiac system.

As our bodies naturally age, taurine is necessary for many of the biochemical changes that occur. Taurine may help clear free radical wastes from the body. Taurine is also important for healthy heart function. Since taurine is a key ingredient of bile, it aids fat absorption, helping promote healthy cholesterol levels, blood pressure and weight. Because taurine helps hydrate the brain, it may also support a healthy neurological system. Both NSI® L-Taurine and NSI® Magnesium Taurinate provide your body with the natural taurine it may need.

Now Hear This: Ear Care is Important to Overall Well Being

Ear care is sometimes one of the last things we think about when maintaining our health. Proper ear care is vital to the clarity and health of our hearing. For example, an abundance of waxy build up in the ears may actually distort how one hears. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) notes that symptoms related to excessive ear wax include: earache, tinnitus (noises in the ear), a sensation that the ear is plugged and even partial hearing loss (which may be progressive).

There are certain things that you can do at home pertaining to ear care that may help keep such build up at bay. Ear drops that contain a natural blend of oils and herbs may be of benefit, as they help soothe the ear and may help soften and dislodge any buildup. Ear candles have been used for centuries as a safe and natural way to promote ear care, particularly when used to extract waxy buildup and other foreign matter from within. Maintaining proper ear care should be an important part of your healthcare regime. It just may contribute to your continued good hearing for years to come.

Hormone Enhancers Help Channel Youth and Vigor

Hormone enhancers may provide just the boost you need to keep feeling young, vital and strong. Hormone enhancers may also help you reach peak performance during periods of intense physical activity. Growth factors are proteins secreted by cells that help initiate many actions within the body. In turn, these actions influence specific functions relating to the aging process, our immune system, degrees and types of physical exertion and performance, muscle growth, sexual function and how we deal with stress.

As we get older, the amount of growth factors our bodies manufacture declines. This is due to the drop in human growth hormone levels that we also experience. Hormone enhancers may help replenish these growth factor levels by stimulating their production and release. Hormone enhancers are available as dietary supplements. They may be of particular interest to you if you are looking to maximize the results of your workouts, since hormone enhancers may favorably influence endurance and recovery, and may also help promote muscle growth and strength.

Add Flax Seeds to Your Diet for a Boost of Omega-3s

Flax seeds are delicious and nutritious additions to your diet! When ground up, flax seeds can be sprinkled over foods such as cereal, yogurt and salad, adding texture and a rich, nutty taste. Flax seed oil can be added to bakery items or drizzled on pasta and vegetables, too. In addition to sparking the taste buds, flax seeds provide a rich source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs).

The Omega-3 EFAs found in flax seeds can contribute to a healthy heart, cardiovascular system and joints. They can also offer comfort and enhance mood during times when women experience hormonal fluctuations. On a purely superficial note, the Omega-3s in flax seed can promote healthy, glowing skin! Low in carbohydrates, flax seeds are also a good source of fiber which makes them even more beneficial if you're watching you weight. In addition, flax seeds encourage antioxidant activity within the body, helping ward off free radical damage to cells brought on by oxidative stress.

Natural Laxatives That Are Safe and Effective

There are times when we all could use a little help getting back on track with certain things. This can be especially true when seeking relief from constipation. Laxatives frequently help, but it may be a challenge finding a laxative that is both gentle and effective.  A natural laxative that doesn't contain harsh chemicals is often the answer. There are many herbs that have laxative properties, including Senna, Aloe Vera, Psyllium seed husks and Cascara Sagrada. In addition to their laxative properties, some of these herbs may offer benefits related to other digestive concerns such as diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Senna has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries. It contains natural compounds that gently stimulate colon activity, producing bowel movement. As a natural source of soluble fiber, Psyllium is an effective natural laxative that promotes bowel regularity and helps relieve constipation caused by certain lifestyle factors. While Aloe Vera is well-known for the wonderful soothing and softening properties it bestows when applied to the skin, it can also be used as a laxative, keeping bowel function running just as smoothly. Cascara Sagrada, translated as "sacred bark" in Spanish, may not be as well known as these other natural laxatives, but it can be just effective, gently encouraging the muscles in the large intestine to contract, causing bowel movement. While all of these herbs are recognized for being safe and effective natural laxatives, you should always follow the suggested serving amounts and you will be back on track in no time!

July is National Blueberry Month

We are midway through the summer of 2007 - time for swimming, sunning (safely of course), hanging out with family and friends along with enjoying the bountiful array of summer-sweet fruits. Blueberries are a wonderful way to perk up our taste buds: blueberry pies, blueberry cobblers, blueberry parfaits, blueberry smoothies or just grabbing a handful of these tasty treats.

But, in order to reap the powerhouse benefits of these amazing fruits, we would need to eat tons of these little gems. Now, if you have a fear of turning into a giant blueberry (like that girl in the Willie Wonka movie), then now is the time to try our NSI® BerryVin™ High ORAC Berries supplement. This unique formula contains extracts of high-quality blueberries, blackberries, cranberries and strawberries, along with grape and pomegranate extracts - all of which possess antioxidant properties.

Did you know that Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC), adopted by the U.S Department of Agriculture, is a test that measures the antioxidant content within foods and supplements? The higher the ORAC score, the higher the amount of free radical protection provided. NSI® BerryVin™ High ORAC Berries has an ORAC score of 5,000/gram. Therefore, by taking one to two daily capsules, you can achieve a daily goal of 2,000 to 5,000 ORAC units.

Red clover blossoms ease menopausal and prostate symptoms

Red clover grows wild throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Red clover blossoms are egg shaped and pink to purple in color. They are rather sweet tasting and have a light, honey-like fragrance. For something so seemingly delicate, red clover blossoms can be quite powerful and versatile!

Red clover blossoms have been traditionally used for detoxification and sedation, and also for treating respiratory problems. It has been used as a topical remedy to soothe and cure skin ailments. Red clover blossoms are a source of many important nutrients, including calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, tryptophan, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine and vitamin C.

Red clover blossoms are also a rich source of isoflavones. It is believed that these isoflavones ease menopausal symptoms in women without the safety concerns attributed to estrogen replacement therapy. Studies have also shown that the isoflavones found in red clover blossoms promote prostate and urinary health in men.

Red clover blossoms are believed to enhance cardiovascular health and bone density, and have been used as an appetite suppressant and as a treatment for easing skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. So if you are looking for a natural alternative to certain synthetic remedies, you may want to look into a supplement that contains red clover blossoms.

NSI® Pine Bark Extract – a Potent Antioxidant Supplement

Antioxidants are important to help your body fight off the damaging effects of free radicals. While the body produces antioxidants naturally, they become less abundant with age. You can acquire antioxidants through certain foods such as berries, broccoli, tomatoes, red grapes, garlic, spinach, green tea, soy and whole grains.

However, it may not be that easy to incorporate a beneficial amount of these foods into your diet on a daily basis. To make sure your body gets the right amount of antioxidants it needs, why not try a supplement that contains a very powerful source of antioxidants–pine bark extract.

Pine bark extract, also known as Pycnogenol, comes from the inner bark of certain pine trees. As a scavenger of free radicals, pine bark extract is even more powerful than vitamins C and E! Pine bark extract is rich in compounds known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs for short. OPCs are part of a potent class of polyphenols derived from the various parts of some plants.

NSI® Pine Bark Extract is a great dietary supplement to try if you want premium antioxidant protection. NSI® Pine Bark Extract is standardized to 95% OPC, which means each 100 mg single serving capsule provides a high quality dosage of pine bark extract each and every time.

Keep Control of Blood Sugar Levels

Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is essential to your overall health and body function. Blood sugar refers to the amount of glucose in the blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy in the blood's cells and is transported by way of the bloodstream.

Low blood sugar, or Hypoglycemia, occurs when your blood glucose level drops too low to provide enough energy for your body. Low blood sugar can lead to issues pertaining to energy, mental function, mood and consciousness. High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, can suppress appetite in the short term, but in the long run can lead to eye, kidney and nerve issues.

There are certain things that you can do to support healthy blood sugar levels, including:

  • Consume good carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetable and whole grains because they provide energy, fiber and nutrients
  • Along those lines, make sure the your diet is fiber rich, because a fiber-rich diet helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, reduce spikes in blood sugar and control absorption
  • Get out there and exercise regularly! Exercise activates the cells that absorb sugar from the blood in order to provide energy

There are also some herbs that can contribute to healthy blood sugar levels: chromium picolinate supports increased energy, healthy weight levels and the metabolism of carbohydrates; gymnema enhances blood sugar levels, promotes healthy weight management and enhances insulin action; and bitter melon contributes to healthy blood sugar levels and promotes digestive function.

Maintaining control of your blood sugar is important for optimal health. As with many other matters affecting your body, it comes down to eating healthy, staying active and incorporating the right amount of the right nutrients into your daily dietary intake.

Food for Thought

Neurological disorders affect millions of people regardless of age, race or nationality and their occurrence is expected to increase as the worldwide population grows and ages. The most common disorders include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, brain afflictions brought on by stroke, traumatic brain injury and migraine headaches.

Daily exercise and nutrition are good ways to take care of your body's "control center". According to Carl Cotman, a brain expert at the University of California-Irvine, we are learning that diet and lifestyle can have many beneficial effects on the brain.

Folate, found in many leafy green vegetables, promotes brain health by reducing blood levels of homocysteine, a substance that can injure brain cells. Foods rich in folate include oranges, spinach, broccoli and bananas. Almonds might also be another potent brain food because it contains substances that act like cholinesterase inhibitors, drugs used to treat Alzheimer's, and don't forget the most celebrated brain food, fish. It is also thought that green tea may promote brain health, but there has not been a causal relationship established between drinking green tea and cognitive capacity. It is important to note that there may be some outside factors associated with drinking green tea that may come into play, such as overall lifestyle (which include exercise) and diet.

Now here's some food for thought – in addition to supporting the health of your brain through sound lifestyle choices, why not also choose to support neurological research. Join the fight against Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or a cause that is closest to your heart. Now that would be a true heart and mind connection!

The Eyes Have It – Protect Your Vision!

Though eyesight is a gift that many of us take for granted, we must still be proactive in taking care of our eyes in order to keep them as healthy as possible.

To start off a lifetime of good eye health, it is recommended that children have their first eye exam by age three. After that, children with normal vision should be screened every two years. Adults between the ages of 18 and 40 should be examined every two to three years unless a doctor recommends otherwise. At the age of 40, a baseline eye exam is recommended, and from 40 to 64, an eye health exam should occur every 1 to 2 years, again unless your doctor recommends otherwise. By the time you are 65 or older, eye exams should be scheduled annually.

In addition to vigilant eye health screening, you can also support eye health through good nutrition. The following nutrients are seen as beneficial, mostly for their antioxidant properties: vitamins A, B-complex, C and E, lu
